First grade students need exposure to new concepts in a variety of ways to help solidify their learning. With a range of books and activities students are more likely to retain the skills taught. The Science of Reading builds from simple to complex and develops phonetic readers. Decodable books and word activities help students practice the phonics skills taught in class. As students are solidifying their phonics learning with various activities they will be working on handwriting through dictation and letter formation is important. Student learning is enriched with new books and activities that bring in novelty. Students reading above grade level can enrich their learning with a listening library. I was fortunate to receive multiple books with CD's from a friend and with the mp3 players students will finally get a chance to listen to those books.
