Students need to be able to interact hands on with what they are learning to make lessons more meaningful. Being able to watch animals grow, eat, and manage their environment provide many valuable lessons children can relate to. Learning becomes exciting when kids can observe other animals up close and personal. No more videos or pictures. Kids can peer through the glass and watch the various creatures and find enjoyment in the animals daily behaviors. Teachers can translate lessons into motivating daily science observations and interactions. My students will use the creatures to help with use of the scientific method and social skills. The students will set up different labs throughout the year. Students will write a hypothesis related to the growth and development of butterflies, the social interactions of fish, and whether ants work good together. Data will be collected in their science notebooks and reviewed after completion. Since all of the students at my school are on behavior level systems, taking responsibility for jobs assigned to the maintenance and care of the creatures will be part of social skills improvement lessons.
