For the last decade of teaching this class I've relied on video demonstrations rather than hands on activities, especially when covering the topics of optics and electromagnetism. The materials I've selected will help me make my physics class far more interactive than ever before. Students will be able to construct and modify circuits to gain a deeper understanding of electricity through experiential learning as opposed to lectures and reading exclusively. The goal is to have students become more excited about learning physics, especially in the areas that are more difficult to wrap one's mind around, such as the study of optics and electromagnetism.
Physics is most fun when it comes to life right in front of you.
With the materials selected they will be able to see the theories come to life right in front of them. They'll be able to see magnetic fields generated by magnets rather than just imagine them. They will confirm basic principles of electricity and circuits by constructing parallel and series circuits rather than just blindly trusting what the physics book says. It is my hope that these types of activities will help to provide lasting understandings as they move beyond high school.
