A Van de Graaff generator is a common mainstay of science classrooms for the purposes of demonstrations. Many of the demonstrations involve the entire classroom and help greatly with the social-emotional learning of the students. Similarly, the academic learning opportunities in a science classroom are equally broad. As an example, having students form large chains through holding hands will let students feel the very low amperage (and thus safe) current passing through them. A real connection with science and electricity, combined with the non-traditional learning environment, will help students get excited about science! The Van de Graaff generator is also useful academically in every physical science classroom. The study of electricity and current is most common in physics classrooms. Academic demos include calculating the voltage based on the length of a spark jump and many more.
