Many of my students have not had any exposure to reading or math before coming to my class. I have several of them struggling to grasp the concepts we are learning and I know that the tools I have chosen for my students will help them better understand. Many children learn better when they are able to use hands on manipulatives to help them. I chose a few different kits that would enable them to practice skills such as using pattern blocks to create shapes and pictures, a number line to practice another way of addition and subtraction, and some that are to practice phonemic awareness.
Phonemic awareness is a crucial element to helping a child learn to read. These kits will allow me a way to work with them or give them a center to practice on their own, these skills they need to master to be fluent readers. It is vital that kindergarteners are taught these skills and understand them while in kindergarten. If they begin to fall behind then, studies show it will get harder and harder for the struggling students to catch up later on. I want to know I am doing everything possible, providing every opportunity I can to help them!
I also chose to get some books that I can use in conjunction with our curriculum in social studies, math and science. Children love being read to and many learn so much that way. I want to have books that I can read to them, or that they may read on their own based on their interests. I do not have a large class library as I am only a second year teacher so this will help me in that way as well.
