Learning and doing science helps people to feel that we are not just bystanders in a chaotic world. With hands-on experiences, we can have this learning and doing of science right in our classroom. In the sixth grade we learn so much about the world around us from the smallest microorganisms in ecosystems to the size and scale of celestial objects in the universe. I would love to use the Inertia Apparatus to help my students understand how gravity and inertia are the key to motion in the universe. I want my students to see the relationships that maintain stability in ecosystems in their own hands with the use of the biome bags. And then for our study of thermal energy and weather, I want my students to build houses out of the Bamboo skewers and glue sticks so they can then insulate the houses as they learn how heat/thermal energy transfers. The Ice melting kit will be another experience to specifically help my students learn about heat transferring by conduction. Then to expand our knowledge of heat energy or lack of heat energy and its effects on weather patterns, we can use the weather maps and materials from the Weather Cycler labs. As all people everywhere are trying to know how to get through tough times and situations, how better to learn than through reading about others getting through their tough times. This is why we need to complete our partial class sets of books for The Book of Boy, A Night Divided, and Counting by 7s. Then each student can hold each of these stories for themselves and become more engaged in their learning.
