My students are fifth graders but due to COVID-19 many still do not have a strong foundation in math and reading. The requested materials will be used to help bridge the learning gap in all content areas by using hands on scaffolds that will allow differentiation that will meet the needs of all students.
The math resource kit will provide tactile and kinesthetic learning experiences. This will lead to both a conceptual and procedural understanding of standards. For example, using manipulatives will allow students to have a more visual representation of what a fraction is. Students can also "act out" word problems and 5th grade concepts using the resources included in the math kit. This will increase both learning engagement and comprehension.
The chosen science and engineering resources are designed to be integrated with language arts and math standards. Students become scientists who use critical thinking and communication skills. These lead to traits such as perseverance that can allow students to recognize their strengths and continue to try until they succeed.
The library books and literacy center will allow students to have choices in their reading genre, while independently practicing reading strategies. They will then have opportunities to share their ideas with others.
These resources provide more than academic support. When COVID robbed my students of foundational learning they also lost social, emotional connections. The chosen activities provide fun, research based, and engaging ways for my students to work together as a community of learners. Thank you for helping build this bridge to social, emotional and academic success.
