Our COVID-19 beginning of year reading data shows student deficiency in nonsense word fluency and whole words read. Consequently, our school-wide goal for the first grade is to increase the number of students who are proficient in nonsense word fluency and whole words read at the end of year testing by 16%. First grade is the magical time when students build a solid foundation in phonemic awareness and phonetic skills which evolve into beautiful castles of reading adventures. The detailed reading supports and tools listed will give students an engaging worksite to lay the brick and mortar foundation of these life-sustaining skills.
