When thinking about the game of chess, many people are intimated if they never learned to play. It seems difficult and scary for adults that never learned the craft of making a decision that could lead to a fatal mistake on the gameboard. Yet it is a social game that teaches so many important skills to help a young student's mind develop. That is why I wish to start a chess league with my 2nd-graders. In my experience, teaching young student's the game of chess creates children who develop problem-solving and critical-thinking skills as well as minds that use abstract reasoning and analytical thinking. The concentration, creativity, patience, and visualization when playing an opponent takes a student through steps of the scientific method without them even knowing it! From the opening move through the endgame, this is a project that will serve my students well. Checkmate.
