During the COVID-19 pandemic, students across the nation fell behind in math, including those in my class. 70% of my students are below grade level in math, with many of them extremely behind in their understanding of fractions. With funding from this donation, I'll be able to provide my students an opportunity to explore fractions using manipulatives like fraction circles and number lines, which will help the kids to build a concrete understanding of fractions. Our school has one class set of fraction circles to be shared between six 5th grade classes. Because of this, my students hardly ever get a chance to explore how fractions work using hands-on exploration. Another class set of fraction circles means that each student will have more opportunities to use the manipulatives, which will help them build a more solid understanding of the relationships between fractions. Our 5th grade does not have any fraction number lines, so these number lines will provide students another means of representation and will reach students who learn math best by visualizing it on a number line. I will have students use these fractions manipulatives to model adding and subtracting fractions, find equivalent fractions, and simplify fractions. Students will also be able to use these as a tool to help them check their work when practicing through independent work. With these fraction manipulatives, I'll be able to help my class get back to grade level in math.
