I teach math to 7th and 8th grade students, and I have 30 of them again during our school-wide mentoring time. I have chosen books that we can read together and have a discussion, or that they can read on their own during our mentoring time. I also want them to be able to have journals to write thoughts as we have class discussions. The items that I would like to support my classroom will be used in both my math classroom as well as during our mentoring time. Math is so very difficult for many students, and I have come to discover that I need to teach math from many perspectives and by including the whole person. It's not the math itself that is the hardest; it's the fact that they need to learn skills of how to work hard, engage in the learning process, see the value in learning math, make goals, and be able to reflect on their progress, allowing them to feel the positive thoughts. I would like to catch their attention through short, fun, engaging picture books. I would like to provide them with rewards for doing well in math--healthy snacks. I really need a good document camera so that my students can see the math problems on their worksheets well. Thank you for your consideration!
