I am a bilingual (English and Spanish) speech-language pathologist who works with many students who have varying degrees of bilingualism in Spanish and English. It is extremely important to have good assessment tools to be able to correctly identify children that have true language impairment versus those who just need more exposure and experience with English. This assessment will help to identify those students who truly have language impairments so that they can get the help that they need in school. It will also help to identify specific areas of language strengths and weaknesses. This information will be helpful in determining the best areas to intervene with so that bilingual children with language impairments can better access their school curriculum.
