It can be challenging to find what helps students with special needs feel engaged and ready to learn. My goal is to find ways to teach them language skills at their level. I need to go where they are and help them build on the skills they already have, or the skills they are keeping hidden. I have selected some early learning toys such as puzzles, a fishing game, piggy bank, and a couple of cause and effect games, to provide opportunities for them to learn how to make requests and learn how to take turns. Many of my students struggle with the skill of joint attention, so I selected toys like the light up wand and the pop pop piano to help draw their attention, hold their attention, and provide opportunities for interaction. Many of my students need to learn language concepts ranging from answering questions to following directions; specifically following directions with preposition words and describing words. I have selected the Fox in the Box set, peek a boo books and directions cards with soft dice to help teach these skills. Many of my students also need to learn to speak in complete sentences and tell cohesive stories, so I have selected a flip sentence making book and sequence cards to help with this. Currently, I am very limited in the available materials I have to use at my school. Please help me to increase my toolbox for working with and teaching these special children.
