In an English Language Arts classroom, classroom novels are irreplaceable. Exposure to classic novels that are at or above grade level help kids grow in maturity, life experience, and most important, literacy. Students are reading less and less these days; I've particularly noticed that with the prevalence of phones, students rarely have the attention span to finish a whole novel. This is where a quality book and a good English teacher come in; they can together ignite a love of reading. The students have risen above and beyond my expectations during these Covid years. We've had to pivot to online learning, attend school in masks, and do a hybrid of both. One thing we lose is the continuity of studying novels. We don't have enough physical copies of books to send home with students. We only have enough for all the reading to be done in class. When we go hybrid or online, this becomes a problem. In 10th grade at Skyridge High School, we teach The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, Night by Elie Wiesel, and Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. We have enough copies of the first two, but we are in desperate need of more copies of Fahrenheit 451.
