On average most elementary students can only sit still for 20 minutes. The students I am lucky to work with, have a much shorter attention span. Each and every one of them is part of our special education program and they come to me to give them a chance to get caught up to their grade levels. Unfortunately I am only able to spend 20 - 25 minutes each day with my students during their small groups which doesn't give us a lot of time. With the wiggle stools my students will be given the opportunity to take charge in using our short time together wisely and effectively. As of now they become either a distraction or distracted by their peers because they are always feeling the need to move. I am spending about half of our time together reminding them to pay attention, stay on task, or stay on topic. Most of the distracting behavior is tapping their pencils on the desk, tapping their feet loudly on the floor, leaning back in their chairs, or drumming on the table which can become overwhelming for others. A lot of my students have sensory processing disorders and/or are ADHD so the smallest distraction, especially ones that become too loud for them, can put them into a situation where they are unable to retain the lesson. Those situations take so much out of them just to try and be able to process the sounds that they become overwhelmed with. The wiggle stools I have chosen are adjustable so each student will be able to comfortably sit at the group table. I strongly believe that these keep the kids engaged in their learning and that's the ultimate goal of teaching. The stools will benefit my current students but also the ones to come.
