Currently our occupation therapy staff provides services to 180 students based in 10 different schools. We are a very small staff of 5 with limited resources. Our students range from mild to severe disabilities. Being that we travel to each school and most times provide services in the hallway or other small areas we need to have small portable activities. Let’s face it, practicing handwriting can get boring really quick! Students are more willing to participate if the activities are fun and engaging all the while therapeutic and beneficial. We want students to get excited when they see us and having fun activities help with that. What the student sees as just a fun game, we see the therapeutic reasons behind it. For example dressing dolls aid in improving independent dressing skills. Screw driver sets can improve improving grasp development, hand and finger strengthening. Big balloons and bubbles can be used for increasing upper extremity coordination, and bilateral coordination. Pattern blocks and puzzles are great for improving visual motor, visual perception and so much more. Occupational Therapy can be fun if we have the right attitude and resources.
