For my project, I will create a “little room” for sensory development for the blind. My district maintenance department will use square tubing to weld a sturdy frame, attach pegboards to the sides and clear plexi-glass to the top, leaving one side open. Developmentally appropriate sensory objects will be attached to all sides and tubing’s strung from the top. The “Little Room” is designed to give blind children with slow development, severely disabled children, and children with combinations of disabilities the possibility to gain the ability of reaching, the beginning of the understanding of space, and early object concept. The room will develop and grow as the student progresses, guiding them through areas of deficit until they reach age appropriate abilities. IEP goals will be created based on perceived deficits and developed through the materials in the room, adjusting for progress. The remaining materials will be attached inside the room to exchange the stimuli for the student as they grow and develop through the missed stages of exploration. IEP goals are developed around the little room as they continue to develop additional skills. As visually impaired students compensate with taste, having their own space in the midst of a pandemic is vital.
