I use Nearpod and other programs for interactive classroom writing experiences. For example, in the interactive Nearpod program, students can participate in writing instruction through explanatory slides that include media (e.g. video clips and graphics). Then, students can post paragraph structure elements (such as a topic sentence, thesis, or otherwise) in virtual interactive sticky notes. As a teacher, I am able through Nearpod to provide live feedback on these sticky notes. I project student sticky-note responses as I discuss student revisions. Students in the class as a whole learn from my dialogue with one student as they improve their own writing. Typically an error made by one student is made by many. As there is only one of me in a classroom of 30-40 students, this leveraging of technology allows me to instruct students on writing more efficiently than one-on-one tutoring. One-on-one interactions are impractical given time constraints. Having a better projector would strengthen our ability to see and interact in this way. The iPad would allow for me to move through the room in other exercises while electronically accessing individual student work for revision conferencing.
