With all of the safety protocols that we have had to follow since the pandemic began, hands-on engaging science has become an endangered "species". This is happening at a time when activities involving STEM are critical so that students don't just turn to YouTube to see things happening- they experience them. Watching a YouTube video about space exploration can be informative, but the experience is enhanced by building a personal telescope and discovering unknown things. If my students can picture or visualize it, they can comprehend or understand it. The materials I have chosen for this project open up a variety of opportunities to create STEM learning experiences students will remember fondly for a long, long time. Each student will be able to assemble their first refracting telescope. Who knows, that person may be the builder of the sequel to the James Webb Space Telescope.
