Visual-based learning is very important for people with various hearing levels. Our deaf and hard-of-hearing students are eager to learn about the world around them. Visuals will help them connect meaning to printed English words (that they cannot fully access through hearing due to their hearing levels). A new easel will help things be visual to the whole class, sequence cards will help them build vocabulary and understanding, word family flipbooks will help them connect words to print, tiles will help them develop word recognition, visual activities will support science understanding, tense cards will support language development, and vocabulary cards will help them build vocabulary in both ASL and English. Visuals also support their social-emotional learning, especially in this time of covid where they have fewer interactions with their peers, teachers, and other adults and often have less access to clues such as facial expressions and lip movements due to masks. A Social-Emotional Photo Library will support discussion and learning about emotions and social situations. Sensory viewers will support them in learning calming strategies.
