Many of my students have not been able to take trips into the outdoors to see ecosystems in action. I would love to bring in a hydroponics and aquaponics systems to let them engage with plants and animals. We would also be able to connect several units together, including the water cycle, ecosystems, and energy from the sun. Hydroponics and aquaponics are a great way to integrate other subjects in science. These systems have been around for thousands of years, even back to the ancient Egyptians (social studies standard). They increase growing time to let my students track data of growth of the plants through graphing and measurement (math standard). I've included non-fiction books for student to understand the process for the growing and they include DIY if the students would like to create more projects at home (reading and stem standards). I can't wait to watch my students grow with this project!
