We carried out an investigation this year to collect evidence that living organisms are all around us even though we can't see them. We carried out a controlled experiment by swabbing classroom surfaces and cultured these microbes on safe nutrient agar. While they were able to see the bacterial colonies and count them on the agar, when we tried to view safe yogurt bacteria under the microscope, the microscopes were not powerful to really decipher and gather evidence that bacteria were indeed unicellular and undergo cell division just like macroscopic organisms. This cellular division is key characteristic of a living organism. I would like to purchase digital microscopes that magnify bacteria enough to see their individual cellular components and watch them undergo division. They will be able to take digital images of their organisms and create scientific presentations to communicate their findings and what their next steps will be in comparing bacteria to higher level organisms such as yeast and multicellular organisms.
