I am responsible for progress monitoring and benchmark assessments for 1st-3rd and have seen that my students struggle most with fluency and retelling while using informational text. Nonfiction literature reads differently than fiction and students have a hard time picking the main idea of the piece. They also struggle more with the vocabulary due to a lack of background knowledge and exposure to this type of text. I hope to expose them to high-interest nonfiction/informational text in engaging ways while still refining the above skills. Games, books, hands-on manipulatives will help with this goal. Although the text focus is nonfiction I feel we are able to continue to support things like fluency, retelling, accuracy, always working to close the gap.
