The materials in my project aim to help my second graders to be successful and will help them catch up academically and socio-emotionally, to close the covid gap. The carpet will provide a specific location for students to practice their social-emotional skills with partners while at carpet time and class meetings. My second graders have never had public school without COVID being a factor. In kindergarten, their school year was cut short. Last year, they couldn’t even see each other’s faces because of masks and some of them were homeschooled. Even this year has been impacted. My students haven’t had the same opportunities that past students have typically had. The headphones will provide focused learning during independent work time, in addition to possible home/online learning. Several of my students just need to move in order to think, so the wobble chairs provide that flexible seating for improved focus and learning. The comprehension and math manipulatives will get the students more involved in hands-on learning for more difficult concepts and for partner projects. The writing tools will help students develop their handwriting. The construction paper and holder will be an arts station for integrated projects throughout the year. The other supplies will bring more engagement and have daily application.
