Enjoying history for most students today takes a strong connection to the history they are learning, as well as a general interest in the topic. Most (if not all) students love music. Music is diverse and an excellent way to connect students to their interests and to each other. I have personally been interested in providing students a way to connect music to history and to see the benefits it has on their learning. Specifically, I want to try a project with U.S. history because of its rich musical history. These two resources will allow me to connect students to history through music, even with the COVID parameters. With every decade and time period I teach, I'll start with an activity about the popular music of the time and we will analyze some of it together as a class. We will then turn to the primary sources to help me in establishing the main ideas of the time. As we make comparisons between the popular music of the time and the main ideas of the same time, my hope is that students will walk away with a solid understanding of U.S. history, the ability to empathize with different authors/artists, and the skill of analysis and thought. With the help of these resources, I will even be able to do this as an online project assigned to students at home. Documenting America provides resources for skills practice while Popular Music will provide content connection.
