Many of our preschoolers have had limited exposure and world experience due to the isolation during the Covid-19 pandemic. They are entering preschool with less than usual social/emotional skills. The products I have selected have two purposes: 1. To help identify and manage their own emotions while working cooperatively with classmates, siblings and adults. Studies have shown that children benefit from a section of their class or home to go to when feeling overwhelmed. In my class, this area is called the Calm Down Corner. The My Feelings Carpet will be the focal point of our Calm Down Corner where the children can go to calm down if they are sad, angry or overly-stimulated. Teachers will be able to point out the expressions on the rug and guide the children in identifying their emotions. The Identifying Feelings kit and Emotion Sorting Kit will also be placed in the Calm Down Corner to aid the teachers. Emotions should always be validated, never discouraged. Our hope is for the child to identify his/her feelings while the teacher validates and offers tools on how to manage those big preschool emotions. 2. To learn through open-ended exploration ("loose parts") in hopes to improve communication skills. Early childhood students learn best through play, discovery and interaction with others. "Loose parts" is a method of learning in our early childhood classroom. Simply stated, a variety of loose parts (or odds and ends) are presented and the children use science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) to create and hopefully enthusiastically describe/communicate with others. The Rainbow arches/tunnels, plank set and building blocks will enable the students to not only create, but communicate to others while they are freely building. The items requested will be utilized year after year by our staff and students, not just one.
