Due to COVID, my students, as 2nd graders, have had little experience with social and emotional learning, as well as learning how to respect one another's differences. Just think about it. My students were only in Kindergarten when everything shut down. That means they missed half of Kindergarten and 1st grade was still overpowered with COVID precautions. Now as 2nd graders they are finally starting to learn how to regulate their emotions while at school as well as how to be kind and understanding of others. I believe that having more books that are about other cultures, as well as social and emotional learning, will help create a more beneficial classroom culture and level of understanding among my students. I plan on using these books daily for read alouds, or mini lessons to increase social and emotional learning and helping my ESL students feel more included and respected.
