COVID-19 has had an emotional, mental, and social toll on a lot of my students. These resources would be so helpful to provide student with "calm down" kits, teach mindfulness, and provide comfort when kiddos need to de-escalate. These tools will help make a significant impact during sessions with my students. When talking about trauma, students can experience various emotions and become very "flooded" or overwhelmed. When this happens, it is important that we have tools to engage their senses and feel grounded. The iPad and stylus will be an excellent tool for engaging with mindfulness apps to learn meditation and grounding skills. The containers, labels, and fidget toys will be for parent/child engagement. I will use these to create "calm down" kits for parents to practice with their students at home when they need emotional regulation. The sound machine, snacks, wall art, and weighted lap blanket will be used in my office space during session. Sound machines work great to create a more private space and maintain confidentiality. Snacks and weighted blankets are excellent grounding tools when students are feeling overwhelmed. Positive affirmation cards are also great tools for in-session learning and helpful when trying to break patterns of thinking errors. Regardless of age or school setting, I see many students from different socioeconomic backgrounds that have been affected by the pandemic and could benefit from extra support.
