Learning in-class or at home in a primarily on-line delivery mode limits hands-on experiences where students can practice what they have been learning. Building and testing balsa-wood bridges provides a mental break from regular homework and other learning experiences. Students work in small groups to design, build, and test balsa-wood truss bridges. Students love seeing how much weight their bridges will hold and earning 'bragging rights' for doing well. There is an element of competition that sparks students' interest and engagement. In a separate experience, the spectrum tubes allow students to quantitatively observe the visible spectrum.
