The Orton-Gillingham approach radically shifts the focus of learning to read from rote memorization to actually understanding the functions of letters, sounds, and words. For students that just aren't grasping the outdated approach most of us use to teach decoding skills, this is a more intuitive, comprehensive way to internalize all the components of language. Just saying "English is weird sometimes" to explain away a funky word isn't going to cut it anymore - we need to MAKE IT MAKE SENSE! That's exactly what this approach does. As someone with a learning disability myself, it's important to me that I continue to develop my learning instead of sticking with the same ideas that couldn't meet my needs when I was a kid either. It is my responsibility to do more for my kids because they deserve it.
