One of my 12th grade students mentioned last week that she, "has never read a book all the way through by herself." Most of the books that she has been given have been too hard or of no interest to her. I want this to change for all of my students but my students need books that will revamp and ignite their interest in learning both at home and in the classroom. I have chosen books that my students have specifically requested and mentioned that they would have an interest in reading, therefore I know that they will receive proper care and be read frequently. To become a lifelong learners, my students need to rediscover their passion for learning new things and stories through books. So many of my students chose not to read during COVID, and the impact of that has been evident as their grade level reading has continually dropped. They need to feel confident in their learning to prepare them for their futures, therefore various genres and grade level books were selected. My students are from diverse backgrounds and homes, therefore the books were also chosen with this in mind. Several of them come to school and have trouble focusing due to having no breakfast at home or other factors, therefore snacks have been added as well to be behavior reinforcers.
