For many bright kids, books are their best and most constant friends! The gifted students in my class often read several books a week. Luckily, our gifted curriculum incorporates great literature and lots of reading, including over 10 class sets of books! We have the books, but they have nowhere to go! Storing all of these wonderful books is problem, especially in a 40+ year old school with hardly any shelf storage. Books are covering the window ledge, stored in crates above the coat rack, and are even bulging out of the filing cabinets! Some have to be stored in boxes and closets, which means they aren't readily accessible for student enjoyment. These books have lost their "power to transport students to different worlds and different times" because they have to be stored in hard-to-access places. Students would love to have immediate access to these books. Shelving that would fit along the back wall of our classroom would give these books a home, and invite students to freely enjoy the treasure these books hold within their pages.
