I teach Special Education Resource instruction. All but two of the kids that I work with have disabilities in reading (most in reading and math). The vast majority of my students come from low-income homes, further impacted by COVID. I want to continue getting new books into the hands of my students. The kids earn them, love them, and ask when "book day" is. Each of the kids I work with earn up to nine new books of their own per school year. Giving new books as rewards for prosocial behavior in class to students who struggle with reading has been a great success! I have implemented various types of reward systems with varying degrees of success in my 17 years of teaching. The least successful plans involved using food/treats as rewards. I changed to books as rewards and used a sticker system. I quickly realized it needed refining. I have eliminated the sticker chart system and now have one day at the end of each month where all the kids can pick out a brand new book of their own. Rarely have I had a student whose behavior was so egregious for the entire month that they didn't earn a book. Please help me keep getting books into the hands of struggling readers.
