I have been teaching history for about thirteen years now, and during that time, I have watched my students arrive at a more environmentally conscious worldview. Aldo Leopold's talent as an ecologist is matched only by his talent as a writer. More than that, however, he provides a window into how to think ecologically about the American past. Throughout my teaching career, I have tried to impress upon my students an understanding of the complexities and horrors of war. Few authors explore these themes better than Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., in his classic Slaughterhouse-Five. I'd like to use both A Sand County Almanac and Slaughterhouse-Five to expand on important themes I discuss in my classes. With classroom copies of both of these books, I'll be able to teach them both more thoroughly.
