After school tutoring can be a stepping stone for students who need extra help. However, it is difficult to focus on homework and learning when you are hungry. Your donation will help fill the hunger gap between lunch and dinner. I have been providing snacks for my students for the past few years, but my teachers salary and the fact that I am the only income in my family is making it difficult for me to continue providing snacks. For some of our students the afterschool snack is also their dinner. We all know that hungry kids may be less equipped to reach their full potential as they engage with the world around them. Studies have shown that hunger can have phychological effects such as depression and anxiety.
Afterschool snacks help students engage in learning by filling the hunger gap many of them face in the afternoon and early evening. Many of our students struggle to learn English as well as the curriculum. Learning can be difficult when there is no food or educational support at home due to finances, language barriers, or lack of computers. Our afterschool program is designed to help not only our English Language Learners but all our students build confidence in their language skills and excel within the curriculum. We have created a safe space where all students are welcome. Some of the students have confessed that they only stay for afterschool tutoring for the food but they acknowledge that the additional help has increased their langauge skills and helped them raise their grades. Our goal is to have happy, well fed Fluent Students! With your help we can make it happen!
