Our alternative high school is small and has the primary function of helping students overcome learning and credit deficits in order to graduate. We are overwhelmingly successful at that task. However, we do not have the ability to offer many extracurricular activities, which help students be more engaged and improve school culture. Before Covid restrictions, we started an extracurricular weight training program. Even though we didn't have a complete gym, we had significant interest and participation. This funding would help develop our weight room on a new campus after a Covid hiatus -- completing our free weight equipment and providing a structure for alternative high school students to engage socially and practice habits of determination. Most of our participants before Covid were from backgrounds typically underrepresented in school sports and activities. Participants had an activity to look forward to at the end of the school day, and it helped improve attendance and grades. Students practiced skills such as goal-setting and tracking that are transferable to academic learning. They built self-confidence and friendships, as well. Many students are interested in fitness. Thus, this program is a excellent opportunity to establish habits and a future mindset that encourage graduation and career success. Next year, our school will be moving to a new campus with space for a weight room. Eventually, we will go from 100 students to over 300. It will be important to develop the fitness equipment we have. The free weights we can purchase with these funds will combine with our existing equipment (machines and limited free weights) to provide students with an extracurricular activity that has proven to encourage both athletic and academic achievement.
