As a new English Language Arts teacher in high school, I am trying to build my classroom library. I find that the classrooms where students are literally surrounded by books, and a variety of books are on display, they are more likely to grab one off the shelf and give it a try. I also like to read first chapters or do Friday Five ("show and tell" five books from the classroom that students can check out for the weekend). Students are more likely to check them out if they are easily accessible. With roughly 30% of our students on quarantine at any given time, building a classroom loaning library is essential for continued learning at home. I have students asking siblings or friends to bring home books, and I have parents coming to the school to pick up materials for their quarantined students. In addition, I am actively building my Spanish library with books that are modern and pertinent.
