Reading for pleasure is an excellent way to alleviate stress and anxiety. It also helps with social-emotional learning. While students become more isolated, distracted, and depressed by consuming social media, books improve concentration and patience. Reading increases empathy by having to read from a different perspective and step into someone else's shoes. Reading also helps with social problem-solving by way of reading dialogue, and different social situations. They see how characters handle conflict and can experience a variety of emotions in a "safe" environment. Reading sparks discussion and learning. At the beginning of every class, my students read for 10 minutes. By having books that spark students' interests and more reflective of their experience, they're more likely to read.
