Students need exposure and opportunity to fall in love with books while developing their skills. The books for this project are contemporary young adult novels that mirror some of the same issues these teenagers are going through. They can connect to characters and learn from the conflicts being presented. Giving them choice and a peer group to read with gets them away from their phones and technology and allows them to become lost in a creative world that fills their soul and develops their sense of empathy. With Covid shut downs and quarantines, these students have not had a book to be able to take home, to enjoy, to talk about. They have been limited to what could be done online. These book clubs will help students come out of their personal isolation and connect to characters and themes while learning how to interact socially and talk about things that matter. One thing that has surfaced over the last couple of years is that many of our students are not reading books-- sustained reading to develop their stamina-- which will be needed for the ACT, college level reading, and trade manual study. Students who say they don't like to read just haven't had the right book, opportunity, or experience to truly know what they are missing.
