As a science department we strive to create an age appropriate, academically rigorous foundation in chemistry and physics. Doing so is most effective when students can observe and study scientific phenomena using hands-on instruments and equipment. The proposed equipment will significantly enhance student's learning. The ripple tank will allow our students to observe and study wave phenomena in an elastic medium, such as reflection, refraction, constructive and destructive interference. The ripple tank will also allow students to observe and make connections with the dual-nature wave-particle nature of light. The study of visible light is an important aspect of both chemistry and physics for students. Currently our ability to observe visible light is limited to inexpensive and inaccurate diffraction gratings. To give students more experience working with scientific apparatus and to enhance the hands-on lab experience I would like to purchase one or more spectrometers. The model proposed has a resolution of 600 lines per mm and can be used to observe optical phenomena, including liquid samples.
