There is lots of groaning and gnashing of teeth when my students hear we are going to be studying Shakespeare. Providing students with the graphic novel version of "Macbeth" will help them better understand the Bard's words and come to love his literature. Students will have the opportunity to both comprehend and analyze these words as this version of the text still utilizes Shakespeare's original language-- while augmenting the story with images to help the beloved and infamous Macbeths come to life. Students absolutely need the skills learned through studying literature like Shakespeare's works: critical thinking, analysis, evaluation, prediction, and others. Hands-on learning games allow my students to practice their burgeoning literary analysis skills while simultaneously flexing their competitive and social muscles. As table groups work together to decode important passages of the play, make predictions, practice vocabulary and grammar, and craft thesis statements, they are forming important bonds with each other and bonds among different regions in their brains. These learning games will shift students' attitudes about school after a year and a half of learning through a screen rather than in-person in engaging ways.
