Even before COVID, many of our students were 100% remote, due to commuting distance and disability. Since COVID, it's become abundantly clear that instruction needs to be engaging, fun, and easily accessed both in-person and remotely. My students also arrive at many different levels of academic mastery. The most effective instruction for my students is easy to follow and self-guiding. My instruction also needs to be accessible outside of school hours and the vast majority of tutorial videos are in English only. While hearing students can watch a quick YouTube or Khan Academy video to re-learn a concept, DHH students do not have that option, as those platforms do not provide ASL interpretation. I will use the Apple Pencil and iPad to make procedural math tutorials in ASL that can be easily uploaded to LMS platforms such as Canvas or Schoology. The Apple Pencil will support these tutorials, so I can use virtual whiteboard programs, such as Screencastify, to show the step-by-step procedures needed to solve middle school and high school math problems. With your support, my Deaf and Hard of Hearing students will be able to access visual math instruction through videos and lessons and allow my students to learn math in their native language.
