With our Science standards changing just before COVID, we have been incorporating more hands-on learning. I would like to buy resources to increase this type of learning and encourage student engagement. Students will be actively engaged during science using hands on resources. First Grade science standards include learning about the moon, its patterns, and the impact on Earth. Moon phase blocks allow students to arrange phases, in order, as each is taught. To increase understanding of Earth's rotation and revolution, a Sun, Moon, and Earth model would help students gain a more visual, concrete understanding. Plants are another science standard we cover. A grow light would give students the opportunity to observe the life cycle of a plant in the classroom. They would experience first hand what is needed for plants to grow. Using plastic pots would allow this demonstration to be used year after year. The last science standard I would enhance with this project is light and sound. A whole group demonstration of light refraction is not as meaningful as a student experimenting with their own crystal. Sprinkles, moving to the beat on the Bluetooth speaker, would allow students a better understanding of sound waves. Eye and ear 3D models help students see a more complete visual when compared to a picture on paper. The engagement brought by these resources will solidify the content taught and further student curiosity.
