My students are experiencing difficulty understanding many abstract concepts in math. With the school closures from Covid, the children are missing some of the reasoning skills I have seen with my students in the past. I know that working with hands-on materials can help bridge the gap between the abstract and the concrete. We have manipulatives in the classroom, but they are stored in a way that I have to dig them out when we need them, and the students have to ask to use them. I would like to have our existing classroom manipulatives stored at the students' level, available to use whenever they are needed. I believe students feel empowered when they are able to make decisions for themselves, and they develop maturity when they are able to take charge of their learning.
