The school is in the process of creating a rigorous Advanced Placement program, including both AP English Language & Composition and AP English Literature & Composition. The goal of this AP Program is to enhance students' experiences in the high school classroom and better prepare them for the college classroom. I want to give my students the opportunity to rhetorically analyze nonfiction such as The Anthropocene Reviewed to show them that rhetoric is everywhere.
The Teachers Pay Teachers funds will help me acquire lessons to help improve students' chances of passing each AP exam, which would in turn give each student college credit and basic writing tools needed in college, regardless of which degree they pursue.
Romeo and Juliet is aligned with the College Board's expectations of what type of literature students will be reading in a class focused on AP English Literature.
In addition, The Anthropocene Reviewed: Essays on a Human-Centered Planet by John Green will show AP English Language students that rhetoric and its use is everywhere. It is my hope that reading a book like The Anthropocene Reviewed will make their learning experience that much more enjoyable and will help them find real-life applications in the way rhetoric can be used in their own lives.
