The implementation of Sound Sensible in our classroom will provide a reading program that will effectively help struggling readers, learn to read. It is a program that targets individual student gaps in reading, through explicit, direct instruction. It begins with phonemic awareness, letter name & sound, and beginning blending of Consonant-Vowel-Consonant (CVC) words. These skills are the essential building blocks to reading. These building blocks in Sound Sensible are typically below student grade level, but without this essential knowledge base, will prevent many children from learning to read efficiently. Several of our students need this very early specialized instruction; especially because of school closures during the Covid Pandemic. Online learning, especially for my special education students, was very challenging, and my students are even more delayed compared to students in normal classrooms. Online assignments and Google Meets/Zoom were almost impossible for students with special needs to complete/participate in, unless a parent sat with them, which often did not occur. By donating a Sound Sensible Kit to our classroom, students’ ability to read will increase, thus, ultimately opening doors for a more productive and inclusive life. This program is relatively easy to implement and may be implemented by a teacher or by trained special education aides in the classroom, allowing for increased individual and small group instruction. As children learn the basics of reading, they will be better prepared for more advanced reading, which would be nearly impossible without a firm knowledge base, of the principles, targeted in Sound Sensible.
