In fifth grade, students use the scientific method to ask the question - What is the effect of stress on the body? They measure baseline pulse, oxygen, and respiration, then exercise to activate the adrenal glands within the endocrine system to release adrenaline. Then, they measure active heart rate, oxygen, and respiration. They also listen to their hearts with stethoscopes. Then, they analyze case studies as a doctor might, looking at clues to figure out which glands in the endocrine system might be having trouble. They locate the gland in body models. Fourth graders learn about the cardiovascular system and use stethoscopes to listen to their hearts. We also put together heart models and look at real models of human bodies. The eye loupes and handheld magnifiers are used to look at things close up. They are good for looking at your own skin and fingernails. Fifth graders and second graders study cells. We also look at blood, skin, lung, and stomach cells using microscopes. We also use eye loupes and handheld magnifiers to inspect rocks and minerals, sand and salt crystals in fourth grade, insects in second and fifth grade, and parts of flowers and seeds in fifth grade science lab investigations.
