When we think of Maslow hierarchy of needs basics are where we start. I’d love to create a closet in our Special Education Classroom that is filled with everything a student may need in order to feel safe, secure, and ready to learn. When students are missing school because they don’t have clean clothes, hygiene supplies or basic necessities this creates a barrier for learning to begin. When students are distracted because their tummies are rumbling, or they are worried about what they are going to eat tonight, this deters from learning. Maslow’s closet could remove some of these barriers. I’d be thrilled if a student could open the closet to get deodorant, a set of markers, a health snack or nonperishable item to take home for the weekend. They could grab a toothbrush, some art supplies, or a shirt to change out of the one they have worn all week. It would be an honor if you’d help me to create this closet for my “practically perfect” students.
