Science is an exciting part of the day when paper/pencil assignments are nowhere to be found. Instead, children are moving around, making a lot of noise, and interacting with materials that help them learn. It is my favorite part of the day because I can see the amount of joy students are experiencing while delving into scientific concepts. I believe that science should always involve hands-on imaginative learning. Unfortunately, having access to an assortment of fun science materials is not always possible. In science this year, my students have been learning to recognize when energy is present. The marble runs I’m hoping to acquire demonstrate this through a variety of moving objects. Through play my students will discover that the faster an object is moving, the more energy it possesses. They will also understand that gravitational pull on an object gives an object energy. My future scientists need to make observations and ask questions about changes in energy. With these marble runs they will be able to observe such phenomena as momentum, changes in speed, and the cause and effect relationship between different factors. COVID has made school really hard for kids. I have always thought a classroom set of marble runs would be a fun and engaging way for my students to learn properties of energy. However, now more than ever, it is crucial for students to love school. Science should be an opportunity for students to learn through play. Science should be exciting and captivate the minds of students. I hope to get the ball rolling and bring some excitement into my science classroom.
