Many of our students reading levels are low, especially through this pandemic. The goal of this project is to motivate our first graders to read. We sometimes have difficulties getting the students to read their take home books and have parents listen to them read and sign that they did, we find that incentives really help increase participation. We will use the puppies as an incentive for them to return their books. On the day the puppies are received, students will go to their class and they will each have a puppy on their desk. They will keep this puppy in their book box and when we do reading centers at school, they will be able to read to their puppy. Every students will receive a puppy. Students will benefit greatly by reading more, which will increase their reading fluency and help them have a love for reading. When they read their take-home book at home and return it to school, they will receive a puppy chart that they can put a sticker on for each day they return their book. On the chart there will be random places of other items they can earn for their puppies. Which are they other things that are in the cart. Some of them include a puppy bracelet, a dog collar, a puppy pencil, and a baby puppy. As they receive these items, they will want to keep reading and bringing back their books to get all of the things for their puppy. It is a great incentive to help our students' literacy goals be met. I also would love to add to my student library and add some series books and organizing bins that they can get excited about. When they are finished reading one, they can't wait to pick up the next.
